Kim Jungsang

Chief Science and Technology Strategist and Provost’s Schiciano Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics, Duke Quantum Center, Duke University USA

Jungsang Kim is an internationally recognized scientist and academic in the field of quantum information science. He is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics at Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering, where he has been a faculty member for over two decades.

Throughout his career, he has made major contributions to the development of quantum computing, particularly through an approach based on trapping atomic ions in vacuum chambers and manipulating them with lasers. This work has led to practical and commercially viable quantum computing technologies.

In 2015, together with colleague Chris Monroe, he co-founded IonQ, one of the first companies dedicated exclusively to quantum computing and the first in the sector to be publicly traded. In 2020, he also co-founded the Duke Quantum Center with Monroe and Ken Brown, aiming to advance real-world applications of quantum computing and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

In addition to his research, Kim holds strategic leadership roles within the university. He has been appointed chief science and technology strategist for the provost at Duke University, where he leads the development of the Duke Science and Technology (DST) initiative, coordinating strategy, fundraising efforts, and the recruitment of innovative faculty in science and technology.

He has led the Multifunctional Integrated Systems Technology research group and has played a key role in attracting substantial funding from government agencies, academic institutions, and industry partners, helping to strengthen Duke’s position as a leader in quantum research.
