Luciano Maiani, a theoretical physicist, is Professor Emeritus at Sapienza University of Rome. He has served as President of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, Director-General of CERN in Geneva, and President of the National Research Council. He conducts his research into the theoretical physics of fundamental particles at Sapienza and at CERN. Among his contributions is the prediction of the existence of the charm quark (1970, together with S. L. Glashow and J. Iliopoulos), subsequently confirmed experimentally (1976). He is a national member of the Accademia dei Lincei, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
